University of Saskatchewan Huskie Men’s Hockey: A Colourful Tradition Limited Edition Print for Sale.
This print is the direct result of research completed for Dog on Ice: A History of Hockey at the University of Saskatchewan, by project coordinator and former Huskie coach Bill Seymour, student researcher Kerri Archibald, and the forthcoming book’s writer-editor and English lecturer Michael P.J. Kennedy. The Print has been professionally created to present a visual overview of Huskie hockey from its roots within the campus boundaries to its present status as a nationally recognized programme of excellence within Canadian Inter-university Sport.
What began as inter-facility or inter-college competition among colleges within the university soon developed into a full varsity activity as the men from from U of S, competed against various senior and commercial teams in the area and against University of Alberta and University of Manitoba.
The evolution of hockey on campus from college teams such as St. Emmanuel, Arts & Science, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Law and Engineering is represented in the print by the various faculty jerseys used by each college’s team in the early days of sport on the campus from 1909. The first varsity squad appeared in 1910, but it was comprised primarily of Arts & Science players and therefore they wore stylized A & S sweaters. The first University of Saskatchewan inter-university sweater appears in 1911 featuring a turtleneck, completed with button up collar and a large “S” on the chest.
The team was called “Varsity” until 1932-1933 when all teams on campus were directed to use the name “Huskie.” What followed was an array of different green and white sweaters, some with the word “Huskies” on them, some with “U of S”, and others with just the “S.” It was not until 1963 that a dog, the front-facing Huskie head, appeared. In 1980-81, the “howling Huskie” was prevalent, and with Dave King’s presence, the now famous “ hustlin’ Huskie” appeared in 1982 with variations up to 1993 when the athletic department’s generic Huskie appeared within large “U of S” lettering. The green and white colour of the earliest jerseys continue to be used until the first “third” jersey was created for the 2002-03 season. The new sweater continued using the generic dog, but featured a predominantly black colour scheme with green and white trim.
All the dates listed are preceded by a small “c” indicating “circa” or “approximately,” Research completed has determined as near as possible the first use of each jersey by year. However, because some sweaters appear to have been reused after others where introduced, exact years are not always possible. The colours, too may be somewhat distorted as they determined in some cases using black and white photographs and or multi-washed, decades old actual uniforms.
All monies in excess of the production costs for the limited edition print will go to the Huskie Men’s Hockey Programme.
